Although Friedberg mentions "Generic Cases", I had no idea of the size of this part of the business to Illinois, even after its purchase by Hamilton. Apparently, a significant number of watches were sold with Star/Stellar, Philadelphia victory and Illinois Watch Case Co. cases. The difference between these and the ones on which Friedberg focuses are: 1) they were cased outside the factory (by jobbers or case manufacturers?); and 2) most were not named. All appear to be based on the Illinois 307 movements, which could be purchased directly from the factory. Their price point, as can be seen from the Ads below, was set at the lower end of the Illinois factory cased watches. The following ads are from 1929:Illinois with Star/Stellar CasesIllinoisAd2.jpgIllinois with Philadelphia (Victory) and Illinois Watch Case cases:IllinoisAd1.jpgAlthough they were not factory cased, they still are a very collectable Illinois variant.
I just got the April WatchTime, and found an interesting article. It's about a guy that has a vintage Radiomir, one of the original Italian navy watches, circa late 30s. It was his uncle's watch, given to him by his colleagues in Italy during the warI won't give it away, but it's a fantastic read if you're into the history of Panerai, or even if you just like a good story.Check it out. They probably have something on the web also, most magazines do anymore (I guess I'm more into the physical magazines).
I finally bought a proper watch, one that i could afford at this stage of my watch collection. i was just wondering what some people thought and if i made a good decision? i Know a quartz isnt ideal but just wanted to know if its a good watch to start a collection off with? its an Omega Seamaster 300m Quartz. its pre-owned with few light scratches to the clasp but in overall great cond.Cheers guys :-)cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=320501820853
