Ceramics are possibly the least understood of the materials used in watches. Many watchmakers are nowadays using ceramics for their watch cases ¨C which gained popularity with Rado. Now Chanel, Hublot, Omega, IWC, and many others produce watches with ceramic cases in full or in part.Materials are generally classified as Metals, Polymers, Ceramics, and Composites. Sometimes foams, etcare added but these four classes are universally accepted. So ceramics are one of the three main classes, where composites are mixtures of these three.Ceramics are essentially inorganic solids (organic ones are polymers) that are also not metals. DOH! I guess this is how I learn
I finally got a few hours to spend attempting to reassemble Grandpa's Hamilton Lester. When I was disassembling it I somehow managed to bend the second hand pinion on the fourth wheel (I think those are the correct terms.) I probably set the movement down on the bench, forgetting about the pinion sticking out.I tried straightening it then, and thought I did a pretty good job. But when I tried to put the bridge back on today, it was clear it wasn't right. I tried adjusting again and *snap*! Luckily, there are lots of 982's floating around on the 'Bay, so finding a parts donor won't be too hard.Mistakes are how you learn. Provided you don't make the same mistake again!
