A piece of family history
Hey everyone,Awhile back my dad reminded me he had a pocket watch that belonged to my great grandfather, so I told him to ship it to me. Well, it arrived today. Opened the box & took it out of the packing material. First, I can't convey the feeling I had when I first held it. I realized I'm holding 4 generations of my families history in my hands, passed down for over 100 years. It was quite a feeling.Second, I was amazed to find the watch is working. It's an Illinois pocket watch. My dad never used it. It's been sitting in a box in a drawer for probably the better part of 20+ years he's had it. I'm not sure yet how accurately it's running, but I wound it about 4 hours ago & set it to my atomic clock & it's running about 1-2 seconds off on those few hours. So I'll assume it's about 10-15 seconds off a day. Not bad considering.The condition is fairly good. The crystal is yellowed & scratched up, but probably nothing a good polishing cant help. I have recently purchased an Ebel 1911 tekton 137 caliber movement. I like the watch, my concern is the value of the watch / brand. I have paid substantial amount and few weeks ago walked into the Movado outlet store and was quoted the watch 70% off retail and 20% below what i have paid for it. Not sure if anyone can comment on the brand or any other brands that have similar valuation. I am looking to keep clear of these type of purchases in a future. thanks
