Thompson Tells Watch-World War Stories at WatchTime New York Event
Veteran watch journalist Joe Thompson, editor-in-chief of WatchTime, entertained attendees at the WatchTime New York show last weekend with stories about his 38 years covering the watch industry.In a presentation called ¡°On My Watch: Four Decades Covering the Watch World,¡± Thompson said that he was fortunate to get to cover three revolutions: the quartz-watch revolution of the 1970s, the fashion-watch revolution that started with the Swatch watch in the 1980s, and, most importantly, the mechanical-watch counter-revolution, or renaissance, in the 1990s.Thompson began his presentation by declaring, ¡°The mechanical watch is doomed!¡± After a pause, he went on: ¡°If you were a young watch reporter in the late 1970s, you didn¡¯t know much, but you did know one thing. You knew that the trusty tick-tock, which had had a good 400-year run, was doomed. What does the haute horology world need now? High-end Ralph Lauren watches of course. No less with movements from sibling watch companies IWC and Jaeger LeCoultre, all under parent Richemont Group. The Sporting Collection is my favorite line of new Ralph Lauren watches. I'd certainly "sport" one (cheesy pun), but it is unlikely I'd pay the price. I have a feeling that these watches, while very high in quality, will go the way of Panerai made (also part of the Richemont Group) Ferrari watches. Those started going at half of retail eventually. Just not the right type of marketing. Does a face change alter watch ?
I'm very close to finally getting a PAM 127 . The owner said when he got it he sent it in for routine service.Panerai replaced the face due to a tiny pin sized discoloration on the face.Would this alter the ''ORIGINALITY '' of the Fiddy for potential future collectors?Maybe a stupid question but I own a 60' Vette . Alter anything and you change the numbers matching status , thus effecting future value. Thanks guys.

1950s (we think) Omega - can anyone tell me anything from this picture?
Hi, This watch belonged to my friend's grandfather. He was a joiner and wore it every day of his long career, hence the scratches etc. As far as we know the lens, case, crown etc are all original. Sadly, for reasons known only to her, before passing it on to my friend a few years ago, his mother saw fit to dispose of the both the original box AND receipt!!! Compounding matters further, she put a very cheap and nasty strap on it, and disposed of what was presumed to be the original by its battered state! I know, I know..... the mind boggles.Anyway, the watch now belongs to my friend, and as he no longer has the receipt and box etc would like to know something, anything about it. I can probably get some more photos from him, but for now this is all he has sent me.Anyone?

Hi FellasCant wait for the piece to arrive!!! Cant stop thinking about it... So apologies to post another new thread on this watch 😁😁I paid AU$68,518 for this watch after discount and tax etc... That is approx US$48,0311 by today's bank rate (which is a worse rate compared to money changer).Do your think this is a good deal? Or have i paid too much?? I tried comparing prices just by googling... Some cheaper prices... But I havent bought a watch online/grey dealer/etc before I dont feel safe dealing with non ADs.I know also theres no backing out anymore now, but just wanted to see if i made the right decision :)And just to remind myself of this beauty.... 😊
