A. Lange & S?hne has revealed the first of its new timepieces to be launched at January’s SIHH watch fair in Geneva: the Grand Lange 1 Lumen. A limited edition of 100 pieces, the watch features two firsts for the German luxury brand: a luminous outsize date and a partially transparent dial.The watch comes in a platinum case and has a dial with sections made of semi-transparent sapphire crystal; only the outer ring and the surfaces of the subdials (one for hours and minutes, the other for small seconds) are made of blackened silver. The sapphire areas reveal the disk mechanism of the outsize date underneath the dial. The big date, a hallmark of the Lange 1 family of watches, is the first one that? glows in the dark, along with the time and the power reserve display. The Lange outsize date was inspired by the Five-Minute Clock in Dresden¡¯s Semper Opera House, to which brand namesake Ferdinand A. Lange contributed his expertise in 1841. Historical Perspectives: A Look At The Horological Society Of New York, Owners Of A Unique Watchmaking Library, And The Oldest Horological Society In The United States
Twenty-one years ago the Bulova School of Watchmaking in New York City closed its doors. As the staff was cleaning and packing, they came across an extensive library of horological books and ephemera. Some of the books were hand-bound in leather, adorned in gold leaf, with personal dedications from the authors. Others were extremely old, dating from the 18th century. In addition, they found hand-calligraphed meeting minutes and accounting records. All of these items comprised an incredible horological resource and they were not sure what to do with them. The staff needed to be out of the building at the end of the day and hand over the keys. Urgent calls were made and that same day a large van arrived to retrieve the library. The books were quickly piled into the van and driven off. True!Maybe history does not want us to unearth all the answers of Horology.Anyway, 8 weeks, late the following rare photograph finally appeared in my mail box.
