Obris Morgan is one of the stranger brands out there. It's not the watches themselves that are so weird, though they do have their own quirks and personalities, it's the way in which the brand works that is strange. In the last two years they have released, back to back, a handful of watches that take inspiration from here and there, have an undeniable appeal to us tool-watch fans, and come in at remarkably low prices. Each watch seems to be a test of something new or different, whether a style, component or finishing technique. When the watches arrive, they are all very cool and fun to wear, though noticeably imperfect, as though each is an iteration leading towards the real thing.Their newest watch, the Explorer, takes it's name from this process. Unlike the famous Rolex that is shares it's name with, it's not about reaching great heights or depths, though you could probably put it through its paces, but rather about finish and function. A Benrus Sky Chief Dilemma
About 2 months ago I had a little freak accident while removing my Sky Chief from my wrist, and dropped it to a parquet floor (Ouch! I hear you collectively say. And you are right). Anyway, I just got it back from my watchmaker, who had no trouble replacing the balance staff and (after a bit of a wait) the crystal. Unfortunately, a large portion of the lume in the minute hand (which already had a gap from unstable lume) had flaked off and couldn't be replaced. Before:After: My quandary is whether I should leave it alone or have the hands relumed? I know a local watchmaker (not my usual) who can closely match colors of lume. He'd likely have to relume both as the match is never quite perfect and would stand out if only one hand were done. I thought I'd wait a bit to decide, so all opinions would be appreciated.

Earth Day too ! i actually went back and forth on this one and then i decided to get it. It completes the Ltd. Edition (4 model) set, and is actually a lot cooler on than I thought it would be. Not for every day, and many will probably not like it, but for me on the right occasion, it'll really work ! Hope your New Year is starting out well ! Kurt Kurt

Maximilian Radio-Controlled Watch: Battery Changed; Now It Can't Set Itself
Three years ago I was delighted with my new Maximilian 50-series radio-controlled watch, which gets its time from the atomic clock in Colorado. Last week I had the battery changed, and since then, it doesn't receive the signal; after holding down the crown and getting all the hands to 12:00, when it's suppposed to wait for a signal, the watch starts up and just stops at some random time¡ªnot an even number of hours away, so it's not a time-zone difference. The manual-setting routine doesn't seem to work, either.The watch is out of warranty, and the place I bought it from, Long Island Watch, has no advice other than to send it to Germany. If it needs repairs, that might end up costing more than the watch itself (listed for $170 or so, got it on sale for c. $125); I contacted the manufacturer (POINTtec) says just to send it to them.So I'm dithering. ...the last time someone came on with an AP issue!We seemed to go through a spell of several every week a few months ago...but now nothing! In contrast...go and look at the Patek forum and quite a lot of members are having problems with the date changing...some having problems even after the watch has been 'repaired'.
