Evolution of Quartz TimepiecesThe first quartz watch was brought to market on Christmas day in 1969, but the events and discoveries leading to this revolutionary timepiece date back nearly a century as discussed in Quartz Part 1. After the discovery of the piezoelectric effect, quartz became a focus of study because of the stabile oscillatory signal it emitted. This led to applications in radio and sonar equipment during WWI. The first use of quartz technology to track time occured in 1923, and in 1927 Warren Marrison and J.W. Horton built the first quartz clock at Bell Telephone Laboratories. Early versions were the size of filing cabinets and were built using fragile vacuum tubes, limiting their use to labs. Quartz clocks were so accurate that they replaced their mechanical bretheren as the time keeping standard from the 1940's until the 1960's when atomic clocks were adopted. I've seen many pictures taken on cherry and mahogany desks so I thought I'd do one of my own at work today.The light varies greatly throughout the day so I had a chance to fool around and take about a dozen different photos at different angles.And here you can see why this watch was seemingly made for me - it fits the curve of my wrist almost perfectly.I still find myself staring at it a few times a day.
