Glashütte has a very strong tradition of horological education, dating back to the 19th century. In 1878, the German School of Watchmaking Glashütte was founded in the center of the German mountain town. Today, the school is run by Glashütte Original and named after its famous student and instructor, Alfred Helwig. While you may not know of Alfred Helwig, you most likely know of his famous invention, the flying tourbillon. HODINKEE recently visited the school and met instructor Thomas Goldbeck for a tour. Why doesn't Rolex do things like this?
I know this involves discussing another brand (I throw myself at the mercy of the mods!), but after attending the Breitling B01 unveiling here in Atlanta (awesome, see link for pics) last night I was left wondering why others (Rolex?) don't treat their customers similarly? Surely I'm not the only one here that has been to one of these events....Maybe it's because they just don't have to...has Rolex and others become that aloof and distant? I was really impressed with how well we were treated and really enjoyed the gesture that was made by the evening.Have on one of my other watches today! Hope you enjoy the pics and discussion.--Paul

Incoming 3570.40
Had been casually looking for a speedy and really liked the 3570.40 with the racing dial. They don't come up that often Hodinkee had one on their Friday feature from HQ milton and it sold in an hour for $5500 with no papers. Then I found one all complete and pretty unworn but they guy wanted $7500!resorted to just doing a dial swap... Even was in Tokyo and asked everywhere and ppl just laughed or shook their head. Then while in Miami of all places one pop'ed up. it was head only but had the original hand tag and the serials all matched up! I paid what I think was fair considering they don't show up often and I was in town. Been love ever since. the color combo IRL is stellar and and the pics online can't even compare. been wearing it non-stop and its kindled a desire for more speedy's!Bought a 1125 for it (need proper end links, can anyone help? called around none avail) and love the 1125 its a cross between a jubilee and sub bracelet. Gray market vs AD and future servicing
To all the fellow Paneristi - long time lurker. I just experienced something that not sure has been well covered. For my first Pam 422, I purchased this through an AD, no issues, friendly service but got ripped off on price - I did get two free straps, a T-shirt and a key chain. But I overpaid by a good $2000 USD.Now for my newest addition Pam 590, I decided I would go gray market and save a ton of money. So I did and I thought there were no issues and did save a lot of money.Fast forward, it turns out that my 590 crown has problems in not being able to wind fully. Something is a-miss. I sent it back and it was fixed by the gray market seller - actually really fast. Same issue again, so this time I took it to a connection at the AD who had his expert take a peek as a favor. It turns out the 590 has had original Panerai parts substituted with generic servicing parts. My AD said this will be much more common as the MFGs take all of the movements made in house, limit parts distri
