Konstantin Chaykin is quite a rare bird in the world of independent horology, in that he works outside of Switzerland. Chaykin is the only Russian member of the?Acad¨¦mie Horlogere des Cr¨¦ateurs Ind¨¦pendants (ACHI), the professional body for independent watchmakers that counts the likes of Philippe Dufour and Kari Voutilainen?as members. This alone makes Chaykin and his work interesting, but the fact that he's also developed an entirely new complication made us take a closer look. Here is a first look at the Cinema watch, housing a nineteenth-century style mechanical animation.The Cinema was released earlier this year at Basel World. It is called the Cinema because of its unique complication, which simulates an early style of mechanical animation. The aperture at 6 o'clock reveals an animation of a horse running. Weirdest thing you've traded for a watch?
I know most 'normal' people buy watches, but that's boring! Trading goods for goods is the oldest sort of economic transaction, and I plan on keeping that alive!I haven't done much 'trading', but there is one watch I remember.When I was in elementary school there was a kid in a grade above me that had the most bada** watch ever, it was a batman quartz that glowed in the dark and would light up if you pressed a button on the side. I so wanted that thing you couldn't believe Eventually I worked out a deal with him, 4 moonpies. The school had outlawed selling 'junk food' in the cafeteria so I had to smuggle them in. We did the deal and I was the proud owner of the most awesome watch a 6 (7?) year old had ever seen.Of course, a few weeks later it failed it's trial by water, oh well.So what are some of your stories?
