Sotheby’s Geneva Sale Brings $8.7 Million
Sotheby¡¯s May 15 Geneva sale presented pieces representing five centuries of watchmaking, from 1580 to the present day. The top price was realized by a very rare Patek Philippe ref. 2499 which fetched $815,637, and by one of the most exclusive examples of a stainless steel Rolex Daytona ¡°Paul Newman¡± with inverted lines, which brought $233,150. All totaled, the sale yielded $8,753,568 including buyers’ premiums.The top-selling lot, number 185, was a yellow gold Patek Philippe chronograph wristwatch with perpetual calendar, moon phases and tachometer scale. First sold on December 18, 1962, it sold within the pre-sale estimate.The Paul Newman Daytona, lot 280, is an extremely rare example with inverted lines and an unusual signature on the dial featuring ¡°Oyster¡± on the third line after ¡°Rolex¡± and ¡°Cosmograph¡±. Hello from the new guy.
I have been fond of watches my whole life. I have been through many cheap/inexpensive watches over the years. I wish I could afford the top of the line, skillfully hand crafted status symbols that I admire. But as a military man I have to stick with entry level work horses. Right now I have a Citizen Eco Drive Skyhawk, Wenger TerraGraph 7276, Invicta Pro Diver 9937, and a Triumph 3034-04.I lust for the day I can swing a Breitling Navitimer, Rolex YachtMaster, Omega Seamaster (catching the nautical bug yet?), etc.

I've Settled on the 39mm Railmaster . . .
My 1987 Rolex 16013 was my 24/7 watch from 1987 until December 2009 when I placed it in semi-retirement, i.e., special occasions only. Since that time, my Seamaster 300M GMT and 39mm Railmaster have been in every-other-day rotation. Well, although I'll miss the date on the GMT a bit, about a week ago I decided on the Railmaster for everyday wear. My decision was based on the size, weight and simple, elegant style of the Railmaster. Of course, since my favorite niece (15 years old) thinks the GMT is cool, I'll be sure I'm wearing cool when I see her. I've notice, too, that the Railmaster is even more accurate when it's worn everyday as opposed to every other day. Now, this is really cool . . . so I've been told . . .

I'm on vacation from California and flew into Panama today, and was surprised to see an AD in the airport. Any benefit to purchase from a dealer in Panama? you think it would be cheaper or just no taxes? Pretty good selection there too.
