Bulgari Octo Bi-Retro Steel Ceramic Watch
I discussed a little while ago about how Bulgari (Bvlgari) incorporated Gerald Genta, and Daniel Roth (brands it already owned) into the Bulgari brand. You can read all about that and see a video interview with Bulgari talking about it here. The first product of this digestive affair is this watch. Basically a re-branded Gerald Genta Octo Bi-Retro, that has a bit more Bulgari-ness to it. The overall shape and dimensions of the watch are the same, but styling has been "face-lifted" and injected with some of the Bulgari DNA. It feels like the outcome of a? mad scientist combing the DNA of multiple animals, err, I mean watch brands. Why must these men play god!? This horological Chimera is without true soul. Soon we will have an army of "Bvulgenta" and "Daniel Gari" watches all over the place.Clearly the Gerald Genta style fits? better with Bulgari, than does Daniel Roth. This Week's Theme: Horizon Look!
The late 1950s were a time of stylistic experimentation. Lots of futuristic themes, rockets, flying saucers, etc. In 1957 (roughly), Elgin launched their 'Horizon Look' watches. These had Wraparound Crystals, which completely covered the front of the watch, creating a unique look. This week's watches will all be from the Horizon Look series. Today's watch is the Lord Elgin Celestial.This was one of my early Elgin acquisitions, and one of those I'm fondest of. This angle shows off the Wraparound Crystal:\\It looks very different from most other watches. The case is white gold filled. The bezel is painted gray with white hour marks, and a white '12', and the dial is a lighter gray, with white hands to match. It's a 'Nite Glo', with dots of lume and, originally, lume on the backs of the hands.Sadly, the paint on the bazel flakes easily - it doesn't seem to want to stick to the gold, especially after 55 years. Benrus age?
The next one is this Benrus I ran across. I apologize for the picture quality - had a hard time getting good shots of this one for some reason.....Know very little except remember seeing it years ago. I cannot get the back off this one. And it is so tiny and seemingly delicate I am afraid of damaging it. The band seems to be permanent...couldn't replace it if you wanted to. Not easily anyway. There are crystals (doubting they are diamonds) around the top and bottom of the square face. Will not wind.....needs some repair. Just wondering if it is worth repairing and approximate age. It is actually kind of pretty - needs some cleaning for sure. Not sure what color that band is supposed to be!?The only marks are Benrus - 17 Jewel on the face. On the back Benrus - Base Metal Steel - Stainless Steel Back. I did find this serial number jotted down on a piece of paper that was with the watch. Looking for a certain combination - any ideas?

RubberB and Panerai
