Finally, after a year of saving, deciding, visiting Rolex dealers in 3 states, and negotiating with many of them I have my "holy grail". I bought it from an AD in a small town in Texas, where a relative helped me get a great price. I had it shipped about a week ago, and I opened it on my birthday on the seventh.I like the Explorer II because its unique, you rarely see it "around" and copies/rip-offs are few in number (especially compared to the Submariner). Its brushed 904L steel looks and feels amazing, though also not as flashy as some of the polished Rolex models. The only thing that annoys me about this watch is that to set the 24 hour hand you have to move the minute hand simultaneously. I think a 4th crown position just for the 24 hour hand would be great, though I assume Rolex has a reason for not doing it that way.My Explorer is light, but weighted enough to fit comfortably, its also nice to know that its "virtually indestructible".Thanks to everyone here on WTF for answering my
Hey guys !In my never ending quest to find out every last bit of information about military wrist watches during the Great War I am constantly searching for government documents. Now that I have started my 2nd book about watches from the Great War the research has been kicked into overdrive once again! In the research for my first book "Elgin Trench Watches of the Great War" I was able to find the US Army General Specification for Wrist Watches, 579-D, dated October 24, 1916.But, there was an earlier general specification for wrist watches dated November 3, 1914.The National Archives in Washington DC wrote me a formal letter stating that all US Army wrist watch specifications have been lost in time from this era.I was kind enough to donate a copy of the October 24, 1916 general specification that I found to them and asked them to be more careful this time. LOL!Even though they said that the November 3, 1914 document is missing I am still searching for it, just might get lucky one day and
Thanks to everyone for what I've learned reading this forum! Sauntering through all 85 pages, I've read about a third of the threads and enjoyed them immensely. I have five vintage Hamiltons that I wear regularly and it was fun to discover so much about them! Watches were a "big deal" in my family, when I was growing up. No one collected them, but watches were a frequent gift in our clan. Holidays, birthdays, a bon voyage no occasion could pass without someone getting a new watch for us to "oooh and aaah" over! Hamilton and Bulova were the favorites. The fun that went along with those early celebrations certainly sparked my passion for watches. I've gathered up a fair collection over the years, although I'm not as ardent as many here! Now, all of a sudden, I've acquired several watches and a problem! My problem is a watchmaker who's an 83 year old "enabler." Whenever I stop by his shop he unearths some ancient timepiece from the dark recesses of his vault and decides it needs
