Piaget has just announced its first new piece for 2016, which we're going to see live at the SIHH in January. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Piaget's in-house quartz caliber 7P – the company's first in-house quartz movement – it has released a hybrid quartz/mechanical caliber in its Emperador. Caliber 7P by the way was a very important step for Piaget and its small size (especially relative to the first commercial Swiss quartz caliber, Beta 21) made it possible for the firm to do amazing pieces like this one. The new caliber 700P is very different, however: it uses a conventional mechanical going train, powered by a micro rotor that winds the mainspring. TAG Heuer, Google, And Intel Partner To Launch New Smartwatch
Last year, after introducing a new in-house movement and investing CHF 40 million in a factory to support the production of that movement, TAG Heuer had a change of heart. Or, more specifically, TAG Heuer CEO (and LVMH Watch Division President) Jean-Claude Biver had a change of heart.The company shifted directions, presumably to cater to a broader market for lower-priced watches. It seems that mass-produced, in-house column-wheel chronograph movements were not part of that business strategy and so the release of the new movement was nixed, along with the Carrera CH80 and the manufacturing facility in Chevenez, Switzerland. Looked at the Speedmaster 9300...
and there were two things that I noticed. First, when I pulled the crown out to adjust the time, I saw that the seconds hand in the left sub-dial would jump and move about 10 seconds forward as I turned the crown and didn't quite return to its original position. Then I put the minute hand exactly at the 12 o'clock position and saw that the hour hand did not line up exactly with any of the hour markers. It was only slightly off, but this was especially noticeable when I put the time to 12 o'clock where the hour hand seemed one minute ahead I where it should have been. The watch was new in the display case, but I didn't ask the sales lady about it as this was at a jewelry store and she started off our conversation by saying that she didn't know all that much about watches. Has anyone else noticed this in the 9300 Speedie? I'm just starting to learn about watches and automatic movements, but it seems to me that a watch in this price range shouldn't have this problem. Patek 5146 vs 5327
I normally don't post much, but a relative recently asked me about a few different Patek models, and so I wanted to ask you guys for your thoughts. Here are the 3 models he's considering:5146/1G-001 (bracelet model)5146R-0015327G-001So I know it's hard to predict what will happen in the future, but he's wanting to know which one would be more collectible (holds better value, harder to find) in the future if he wants to pass it down to one of his kids/grandkids. He'll probably wear the watch only occasionally. I don't know much about Pateks, but my initial thought is that the 5146 (any metal) has been around for a long time and will be easy to find in the future. The 5327 is a new model, has a beautiful blue dial, but not sure if its production is limited. I also realize the 5327 is double the price of the 5146. Any thoughts about these models?Thanks,Brian
