Omega has since about 1990 used what they now call a 'short PIC' of 8 characters. There are several locations where they are explained. The short explanation is UVWW.XY.ZZ: U collection, 2 for Seamaster, 3 for Speedmaster, etc. V case metal and strap/bracelet code W product variations X dial color Y hour markers Z strap color and variation - Now there are 'long PICs' which are 14 characters AAA.BB.CC.DD.EE.FFF collection||case/strap||size||movement/complictions||dial||counterAAA - the same three digit collection code as used presently. Huh? I didn't know of three digit collection codes, did you? Ok, bad pun as my first post. Don't ban me. I've been reading and lurking the last few days, and thanks to this great place just made my first purchase. Finally the 5167a is mine
Yesterday I became the proud owner of this wonderful watch. I have owned Rolexes over the years and currently have the SD4k and SS Daytona. Both great pieces, but I always found myself looking at the Patek forum and pictures/threads of the 5167a and 5711 in particular and I have always been drawn to the Aquanaut- preferring it due to its tropical strap and more understated, casual/sporty look. I tried one on a year ago at a Patek event and loved it, but didn't get one at that stage as I was concerned about the 'durability' in terms of scratches etc that I thought might be an issue for me as I like my watches as mint as possible (bit OCD). However I have never been able to get the 5167 out of my mind and more recently been feeling the SD and Daytona a bit on the flash side (I went into a shop the other day and the young salesman called out - is that a Rolex your wearing Sir?). PVD coating durability
I know for many of you a PVD treated Rolex is pure blasphemy, but for those others that actually own or have owned a Rolex with a PVD treatment, I¡¯d love to get some feedback (and some photos) on how well the PVD has held up. It seems that one of the knocks against them is that if you get a serious scratch, there¡¯s not much you can do other than use a sharpie and just deal with it.However, my experience has been different. I have a PVD Panerai that has seen a lot of wear, and it doesn¡¯t have a single scratch on it. It does have an interesting patina around the edges of the case. I also have a PVD treated Sinn U1, and I don¡¯t think it¡¯s possible to scratch that thing. After nearly a decade it doesn¡¯t have a blemish anywhere on the case. On top of that, I had a DLC treated Nighthawk Custom 1911, and I had a similar experience - no scratches anywhere.So...let¡¯s see ¡®em if you got them.
