As a watch lover you probably spend more time looking at watches rather than actually buying them. If we bought every watch we liked, assuming the outrageous possibility that we could afford it, we would not have any room in our homes for much else. Thus, we peruse available watches online, in stores, and in magazines. Not to mention what we see on the wrists of others.That process probably results in us spending a good deal of time in watch stores. Sometimes there is only so much you can learn about a watch from a website. A watch that looks good by itself, does not necessarily look good on one's wrist. This comes out very clearly when you try on watches, as the feeling you have when you put a watch on range from, "no," to "yeah..." (coupled with a giddy smile). If you haven’t noticed, it’s quartz week here at HODINKEE. Earlier this week our resident watchmaker, Aaron, wrote about the Girard Perregaux caliber 350, and Jack wrote about the Grand Seiko Quartz SGBX061. But what about other collectible “quartz” watches, like the Beta 21 movement, on the market today? The history of quartz is a complex and lengthy one, so I will try keep it short and sweet. Quartz was invented in 1928 by Bell Labs, and due to the sheer size of early quartz clocks, were mostly restricted to use in labs as reference timekeepers. Quartz experimentation continued through the decades and by the early 1960s quartz movements had been miniaturized enough to allow for them to be used in marine chronometers. It was at this time, that the major Swiss watch brands caught wind of this new technology and approximately 20 maisons (including Omega, Piaget, and Patek Philippe) created the Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH) in 1962 in Neuchâtel

Different types of crystals
I really appreciate all the help and info you guys provide thanks!Could someone please explain the differences between these types of crystals to me: round dome, flat top and prism. I can figure out the first two, but I have no idea what a prism crystal is...Would any of these be preferable to the others? I'm looking at a vintage watch and the dealer is giving me an option as to what crystal he'll put on it.Thanks again.Bob
