MB&F HMX Watch For Brand's 10th Anniversary Priced At 'Only' $30,000
The MB&F HMX watch celebrates the 10th anniversary of the landscape-changing Geneva-based Swiss watch maker founded by Max Busser. "HMX" means "Horological Machine 10," but that should not be confused with its numerical order in the collection because it would really be the HM7 after last year's MB&F HM6 (hands-on here). With that said, the MB&F HMX is most closely related to MB&F HM5 watch - that shares a similar concept and visual form. To join the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) which affects almost 250,000 boys worldwide, Piaget has designed a unique version of its Altiplano especially for Only Watch. This watch will be auctioned off along with forty other timekeeping devices on November 7th. Famous for being the world's thinnest mechanical watch, the Altiplano model is fitted with a manual wind calibre which you can glimpse on the front and back. The slim figure doesn't allow for a dial (3.65mm thick) but the black satin-finish surface gleams in the 38mm white gold case. The hours and minutes tick by beneath two red baton-shape hands which glide over a painstakingly graduated silver ring. Just bought back my first watch!
In April 2005 we stopped in Roatan, Honduras (or could have been Belize as we stopped in both ports) for a day on a cruise ship and a being a relatively new port watch and jewellery shops were just opening up. From memory there was a new Columbian Emeralds store which stocked Omega which I went in.I bought an Omega Seamaster Professional 300m. Automatics were around ?900 and the battery/manual ?750 once exchanged but I didn't know this at the time. The shop had only just opened and I ended up buying an automatic but only paid ?750 - it was only later that on other islands and checking out the prices that I'd worked out the correct prices and that they had sold me the more expensive watch for the cheaper price. I had really wanted a Rolex but couldn't afford one. Anyway a few months later we were going on another Caribbean cruise with my parents and I ended up pushing the boat out and buying a Yachtmaster Rolex.
