Gruen Autowind question
I recently got a line on a Gruen Veri-Thin Autowind in a "junque" shop in New Orleans. It's dirty, needs service, but it does work and keeps time. I have a reference book coming, but I may have to move fast on the piece. I could feel the armature winding, and the sweep second hand started moving with no intermittent motion, even in different positions. I didn't feel the armature hitting any bumpers, though. Did they make Autowinds that were continuous winding (w/o bumpers)?I only had a quick look at it since the store was closing and the clerk was not about to delay going home. I wasn't able to pop the back, so I wasn't able to get a movement identification. The case is Rolled Gold PlatedI know what Rolled Gold is but does the "Plated" designation indicate anything else, such as a cheaper process?Generally, are Autowind Veri-Thins scarce? From what little I've read the Gruen Co. didn't make these very long. I just wondered about if anybody thinks I should pursue this for cleaning/rest

Keeping Your Powder Dry
Over the past few months, several times I've bought watches on impulse that were nice watches, and I got them for good prices. But a few days later, a watch I REALLY wanted came up on the Swamp, and they went past where I felt I should go, since I'd just spent $20-$50 a day or two before (You see, I really AM collecting on the cheap!).Ah, but I'm learning! The past week, I've watched a number of auctions for nice watches I wanted go by, to save money (and Marital Good Kharma) for a piece I REALLY want!It's tough, though! A couple times I've actually typed in a bid, then managed to avoid hitting the 'submit' button.The other thing I'm trying to do is to hold out for the nicer pieces, and not jump on the first scratched, brassy, grungy watch of a particular model I see. This place will make a real collector out of me someday!!!

The right watch for your Profession...
Wombat has recently posted a thread featuring his new Pulsometer watch, which fits in very nicely with his medical profession (even if it is a bit hard to actually use for its intended purpose).This lead me to wonder, does anyone else own a watch that is designed for their profession, or ticks all the boxes for your job?An obvious example would be a diver and his diver's watch(es) - I know there are some professional or serious divers at WTF.Maybe someone who works around magnetic fields with their Rolex Milgaus.Or perhaps you work in a tough industry and need a tough watch - G-Shock, anyone?So - how about some pics of the watch that is just right for your chosen profession....or even, "This watch would be just right for my job...." if you don't happen to own it now.

ROO Question?
With the regular ROO rubber and deployment, is it possible to put a tang buckle on there, or is it made only for deployment?If so....can the diver strap and buckle fit on a ROO chrono?or is the survivor strap and tang the only route here?last question promise - any aftermaret rubber straps that are better than OEM that will fit with diver tang or aftermarket tang?thanks all!
