Affordable Vintage: Seiko 6138-0030 "Kakume"
Of all the incredible chronographs produced by Seiko in the 1970's, in my opinion there is one that stands head and shoulders above the rest: The 6138-0030 aka "Kakume". During this era there were two main chronograph calibers used, the single register 6139 and the dual register 6138. The fiercely popular 6139-600X (aka "Pogue") chronographs get the lions share of attention due to their status as arguably the first automatic chronograph in space, having been worn by William Pogue during space flight. By comparison the 6138 series is under appreciated, but it definitely stands tall in its own right.The 21 jewel 6138A released in 1970 was the first fully integrated automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch coupling mechanism. Some time later, they switched to the 23 jewel 6138B. They are both automatic (rotor winds in both directions like most Seiko calibers) and hand windable, which is uncommon in vintage Seikos, and the day and date feature a true quickset mechanism

New Alpha GMT ** HOMAGE WARNING**
This is an extreme Homage warning. If you don't like them, might be best to hit the back arrow on your browser! Now that's out of the way (lol)Ok so I had been looking at the Alpha's and wondered on their quality. So finally I pulled the trigger on a GMT model to check them out. I had heard some good and bad with them so I figured it was going to be a crap shoot.On to the watch.It took about 2 weeks for it to arrive from Hong Kong. Here is the package it came in.It was packed well and arrived undamaged and ticking away. No Box, the watch was in a familiar green pouch. Came with a warranty card (LOL) and an instruction manual, and completely wrapped in plastic.After taking off the plastic, and inspecting it, one thing jumped out at me... they look like SEL's but they aren't. They are hollow end links. Have a look.So that was a bummer. Next odd thing that stuck out was... this isn't a divers watch, and it's only rated at 30 meters, yet it has a divers extension.
