The company dates back to 1894 and the current Rolex building you see from the train in the mountains of Bienne; was originally the Gruen factory.I was amazed by the curved mechanism and so enthralled by how someone could make a watch movement that was curved to fit the wrist. My Grandfather's Pocket Watches.
A recent topic "Still Carry a Pocket Watch?" opened up a line of thought I must comment on.My Grandfather carried pocket watches until the day he died at 87 years old in 1992. In his case they were the most convenient option. When my Grandfather was 19 years old he lost an arm in the family cotton gin. Putting on a wristwatch isnt very easy when you only have one hand. When he died I discovered 8 pocket watches including the two he usually wore. A Hamilton "Railroad Watch" (992B? Maybe given to him by Great Uncle Robert who was a RR Engineer) he wore daily and a smaller and much thinner Hamilton he wore with dress clothes. I seem to remember at least a couple of Illinois and an Elgin with the rest being Hamiltons. I dont think they were all worn by him. Other older gentleman who where in Church or the Masons with him may have given him pocket watches they were no longer used as wristwatches became the primary choice. Funny ebay behaviour
I have noticed some odd things on ebay lately. I have bought a couple of small items from 2 different ebay stores. Each time the other bidders weren't listed, and each time I got a second chance offer immediately after I lost the auction. How did they know so fast the winner wasn't going to pay unless they were bidding themselves and hiding the bidding name so people couldn't see it was always the same bidder?!Anyone else come across this?

What a day what a day
I don't see enough threads about the things that people DO with their watches other than look at them. There's an occasional mention of wearing one to work, but rarely do we see them in the wild having fun.I used my Blue JDM Riseman to let me know that my friend and I completed the Everest Challenge - Ski/Ride the height of Mt. Everest in one day. At a bigger mountain, it's not that much of an accomplishment but at our home mountain with it's measly 1400 feet of vertical it's tough and takes most of the day.
