Parmigiani Fleurier, the boutique brand founded by master watchmaker Michel Parmigiani, has added a new limited-edition watch, called the Tourbillon Abyss, to its collection of Pershing timepieces, established in 2007 in a partnership with the prestigious Italian yacht manufacturer.Introduced at the SIHH watch salon in January, the Pershing Tourbillon Abyss, which is limited to 30 individually numbered pieces, has an exceptionally light titanium case middle, a dynamometric screw-down crown and a rose-gold, unidirectional bezel. The dial evokes the nautical influence of Pershing yachts, with its deep azure hue and wave patterns in various lighter shades of blue, achieved by creating multiple fine layers with an electroplating process.Like other timepieces in Parmigiani’s Pershing family ¡ª the brand’s first sports collection ¡ª the watch’s case bears distinctive curves that bring to mind the shape of a yacht’s hull. The main case material is grade 5 titanium, which
Baselworld 2015 came and went seemingly faster than previous Baselworld watch trade shows. Maybe that is because team watches-dealer met with so many brands, hour after hour, for a solid week. By our records, we formally met with about 85 watch brands in the hopes of capturing as wide a scope of what is new in the watch world as possible. That includes meetings with the big boy luxury watch makers such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, Omega, TAG Heuer, Breitling, and many more that represent most of the world¡¯s high-end watch makers, as well as meetings with more mainstream producers of timepieces such as Bulova, Citizen, Seiko, Casio, and Victorinox Swiss Army. More so, we took the time to learn what smaller independent watch makers were doing to innovate and add variety to the world of not only mechanical timepieces, but also some interesting new electronic and smartwatches.Team watches-dealer at Baselworld 2015; from left to right: David Bredan, James Stacey, Ariel Adams ¨C with Mark Carson
One of my favorite under represented Swiss watch brands is Vulcain. I have written about them before, for example here when I discussed how the brand gives one of their watches to each new US president (specifically it was for Obama). That watch happened to be Vulcain's new Anniversary Heart watch which is pictured here. Isn't it nice?Vulcain watches are really rare. I believe there are some authorized dealers in the US, but I haven't been to any of them. I got to check out these watches at L'Heure Asch in Geneva. Denis Asch, the proprietor of the shop is probably the most respected independent watch dealer in Geneva. He has pretty good taste, and Vulcain is among the select brands that he carries. Actually, I found that Geneva isn't really a hot-spot for independent or smaller brands. The city is dominated by brands from mostly the Swatch Group, Richemont Group, and select high-end brands (like Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe). Those looking for interesting stuff that is less common
Well, it's finally almost sort of here, Summer, as marked by Memorial Day. This much loved and awaited for long weekend is not only an official holiday of remembrance, it's also the first time people light up their grills for the season (ok, if you've been following us on instagram, you know we started a couple of weeks ago). And¡ if you happen to have a boss who believes in such things, Summer Fridays (which is the real start of Summer, right?)! Anyway, long story short, it's a long weekend when the weather is usually nice in which we encourage each other to drink cold beer and eat grilled meat. So, it's one of the best weekends.Of course, the holiday itself is a day to remember and give respect to those of the US Armed Forces who have fallen in combat. As such, we thought that this edition of PWW should focus around a watch that though a reissue well after that fact, has it's roots in actual US military history. The Bulova Commemorative Hack watch, which we reviewed some time ago, is
