Antiquorum’s Auction Season Ends With a Bang
A standing-room only crowd at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel competed against more than 250 internet bidders from over 40 countries at Antiquorum’s 2009 Hong Kong auction. The sale brought a total of HKD 45,453,120 ($5,864,199). 82% of the 479 lots offered were sold, representing 115% of the estimated value. The top price was paid for a rare Patek Philippe Ref. 3974 made in 1990. The astronomic, minute-repeating, self-winding, 18K yellow gold wristwatch with perpetual calendar, leap year indication and moon phases achieved HKD 3,000,000 ($387,049). Also making strong showing was a platinum, diamond-set Franck Muller Caliber 97 Grande et Petite Sonnerie Minute-Repeater, Perpetual Calendar made in 1997. This piece also incorporated equation of time, moon phase, and 24 hour display complications. It brought HKD 2,820,000 ($363,826). Quintessentially British brand Bremont has a new boutique just off London's Mount Street, which just opened in July 2012. They invited us over to take a look and share a drink with the team and a few collectors. The shop fits the brand perfectly, and here's a look at what we saw.?The first thing you notice when you walk in the front door is a vintage motorcycle. It's the real deal, not a prop - there's a drip pan actually catching oil sitting underneath the thing. The whole boutique is like this - instead of aviation, diving, and motorsports inspired decorations, they've brought in real pieces to fill the store. A floodlight, and ejector seats, propellers, and a few other sizable hunks of wood and metal are peppered around the shop floor. I found a brand new ck2998 in Japan and with the tax free, additional 5% off and exchange rate it will come to $5413. Of course I would still have the tax when returning to the US.
