Think about this for a moment: before the 1880's, there were hundreds of time zones within the United States, with towns all across the country adhering to their own standard of "local time." This confusing system was a relic of an America before efficient transportation networks, when there wasn't much need for a centrally regulated, uniform system. The advancement of the railroad system in the late 1800's necessitated a change to a more standard system, and this short excerpt from the upcoming PBS series "How We Got to Now" demonstrates just how confusing things were before then ¨C and how essential timekeeping is to keep modern society up and running.

Speedmaster sapphire caseback fitting
Just thought I would share with you my Speedy caseback transformation utilising a Thomas Preik sappire caseback. This is an easy DIY job and all you need is a tool that has an end like this:You simply adjust to size and unscrew the existing caseback. Here's mine from 1969 for anyone that hasn't seen a pre-moon Speedy caseback obviously lacking the FIRST WATCH ON THE MOON wording When the caseback is removed you will be faced with a shiny dust cover which just needs prising off with something sharp to get into the join.After having removed this you will need to sit the spacer provided with the caseback on top of the movement edge. The spacer looks like this: And when in place like this:Next is to make sure the new caseback is clean so careful of finger marks. This is the inside of it.And simply screw it back in place, initially finger tight and then with the tool.I absolutely love it since it seemed such a shame to keep the glorious 861 manual wind movement under wraps.The website for

Observations from a (relatively) new member
I have liked watches since I was in junior high and got a nice quartz Seiko from my father for Christmas in about 1983. I had gotten several quartz Hamilton watches as gifts from my wife over the years until I graduated from college and my mother gave me the gift of:I liked it because it was in the James Bond movie and I wore this quartz watch as my daily for many years. It seems like the bezel may have faded over time- now I know that ¡°patina¡± is something y¡¯all like :)As a complete surprise Christmas present, my wife put this in my stocking:Over time I came to be of the opinion that this was the perfect watch with a simple elegance that just couldn¡¯t be improved on, kind of the MacBook of the watch world. Hello all. My first post. Please be easy on me if this has already been hashed out.I had a Date Just since about 2000 but recently lost it along with my house and 2 cars in the Santa Rosa CA fires last month. It was two tone with white face. Loved it. I am contemplating replacing with a brand new DJ version or.....A pre-owned President Model.
