Cartier Sues Apple Over Infringing iPhone App
The Wall Street Journal Online is reporting that Cartier filed a lawsuit against Apple Inc. in Manhattan on Friday claiming that a third-party iPhone app available from Apple’s App Store infringed Cartier’s trademarked designs. The app, called Fake Watch, displayed well-known watch designs on the iPhone screen. Apple quickly removed the app from their store and issued an apology, and shortly thereafter a Cartier attorney announced that the lawsuit would be withdrawn, saying that Cartier’s concerns had been addressed.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting IWC's headquarters in Schaffhausen (with a lucky reader) for a tour of the 146-year-old brand's manufacture and museum. The attention to detail and efficient workflow within the manufacture was mesmerizing, in addition to the dizzying array of high-tech machinery used to produce the modern watches. But what struck me most was the assortment of vintage pocket watches and wristwatches on display at the company's museum – everything from the first mass-produced digital watch movement to prototypical models from both the Portuguese and Portofino collections. Illinois Speedway 178: redux
Just watched the William Haines MGM sort-of-silent pic "Speedway", which I highly recommend (with music and sound effects but otherwise silent, similar to the contemporaneous 1928 "Wings"). It's offered by Warner Classics (wbshop) as a DVD-R (played for me with no problems). Well, the checkered black and white flags used for starting and ending the race were similar to some of the engravings on my 178:But wouldn't you know I was wearing this one instead during the flick!

Finally, watch winders start to become objects of art in their own right.Today, I was shown the OilBaron from the German manufacturer OriginTimes. Another original approach to watch winders is taken by my fellow countryman Bernard Favre from Neuchatel. I simply love to watch them turn and turn.
