Like many other historic "watches revealed this winter by Officine Panerai, the new timekeeper is equipped with a movement of the hand-wound made manufacturing."

I know little of the watch industry. Perhaps this esteemed group can help with my question.In other industries, ornamental designs are covered by Design Patents or equivalents, such as Registered Designs. WIPO countries will also enforce these, and Switzerland (among a large list of others) is a member of WIPO.We know that fake creators are already outside the law you're not going to stop the guy on the streetcorner selling fakes. But if a watch design was protected by a design patent, then you'd be able to enforce it on established companies that make very close homages. Not "loosely-inspired-by" types of designs, but almost 100% copies should be covered.I'm thinking about the many submariner-alike divers, the many almost exact PAM homages, and the like. Many of these differ in style only by the manufacturer's name or a couple of tiny details. It appears they'd violate a design patent.So here's the question: Why aren't watch companies obtaining and enforcing design patents?

Hamilton 7750 problem
I currently have a Hamilton Chrono with a 7750 in it. I hadn't worn this watch in a week or so and made the mistake of setting the date while the time was between 9 pm and 3 am. (I was always vigilant about not doing this, except this one time)The date got stuck and left it alone. I pushed the stem in and wound the watch and it has worked perfectly except that now the date and day are on alternating schedules every 12 hours. It will flip the date at noon and the day at midnight. I took it to a local watchmaker and he indicated that the date wheel was broken and that it needed a complete servicing. He told me the date would not flip at all. (It had been for me though) I was quoted $400 for the whole thing. He said parts are expensive for that movement. I guess I would like to know two things:Does that sound like a reasonable price for the work?and does the diagnoses of a broken date wheel sound correct. I have never taken a watch to this particular shop, but wanted to try them out. Any
