Zenith Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 GMT 1903 Watch Celebrates The Wright Brothers
110 years ago today Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved the first self-powered flight of an aircraft with their plane named "Flyer." That was on December 17th, 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In honor of this occasion, Swiss watchmaker Zenith has released a new limited edition aviator watch as part of their Pilot collection know as the Pilot Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 GMT 1903, and I never thought I'd be writing about the Wright Brothers twice in less than a week. Just a few days ago US-based Shinola released The Wright Brothers limited edition watches.While Shinola watches made in Detroit are technically more closely related to the Wright Brothers being made in relatively nearby Ohio where the Wright Brothers were from and also being made in the USA, I'd personally prefer this Zenith. My first Rolex approaches 11 years old...
As I approach the turn of 2009, I look into my safe and see my first Rolex (White Explorer II),.. dejected, staring out from the corner. 11 years ago, I marked the occasion of a wonderful promotion with the splurge of my lifetime: A quality timepiece. I had previously inherited my grandfathers Girard-Perregaux and my fathers Elgin. I have respect for the men that wore these watches, and I really liked the idea that one day I'd leave my son my Rolex. 11 years later, the old ExpII just doesn't do it for me anymore. It's a little rough around the edges, sure, but I'm also tired of the watch itself. Perhaps it¡¯s the white dial. I danced with a few other brands over the last year and chipped the crystal in a matter of weeks (the Rolex crystal looks perfect after 11 years).
