Newbie question - which vintage Omega?
I just got a Hamilton for dressing up and now I need a vintage Omega for the rest of the time. I was wondering just how durable they are - shock proof, water proof or resistant. etc.? I'm out in the sticks alot and my watches tend to get a full dose of the outdoors. What model would you recommend? Thanks!John

Hello everyoneI'm new to the forum, having purchased my first Hamilton watch.Over the years I've had the usual stuff - Rolex, Omega, Breiting, Panerai, Jaeger. In truth, owning some of these pieces has been the kudos in being seen wearing them.I'm now looking at watches because I LIKE them. Recently I've had a number of TW Steels but whilst I still enjoy wearing a large watch I'm finding that 50mm is just that bit too big.So, my first Hamilton is a Khaki Pilot 46mm with black dial and dark brown strap, although I have also bought the light tan strap and S/S bracelet to fit. Amongst many features, I love the easy-to-read face and the fact that as I move the watch about the numerals pick up the colours around them until I look at the dial full on when the S/S shines out.Imagine my dismay therefore on browsing the forum to find that my watch does not appear popular among Hamilton devotees and might even have a cheapo Chinese movement!Before I throw the watch into the skip, is there anyone

Horology 101 - balance & hairspring
The balance wheel and hairspring assembly is the pendulum of a wrist watch - it regulates the entire mechanism. This is done through precisely measured back & forth rotations called oscillations. Most balance & hairspring assemblies turn anywhere from 270˚ to 315˚ if they are functioning properly, which is referred to as the movement's amplitude. When the balance wheel rotates in one direction it's called a vibration. Two complete vibrations in opposing directions equal one oscillation. The term beats per hour refers to how many vibrations the balance & hairspring assembly makes in 60 minutes. 18,000 b.p.h. equal 5 per second, which means the "sweep" function actually "ticks" 5 times per second....so fine you really have to study the motion very closely to see it. Higher b.p.h. rates can make a watch more accurate, but can shorten the lifespan of a movement due to increased potential for friction and require more frequent servicing.

ROC Lume
Hi AP fans, Been all over the 'net trying to find lume shots of the ROC. Anybody have some? Seems that the ROC's lume isn't very bright, is it? AP noob here.TIA!

Takeaways from Geneva
I wanted to follow up and give some insight to collectors based on what I saw in Geneva. They really did give us a look under the hood. We saw even production sheets that stated how many pieces for the run and how many runs per year. I wont speak specifically to that given their transparency. Bottom line, those of you who think the best days of Patek are behind them are crazy. Here are a few facts I am comfortable sharing:-53000 watches per year-12000 quarts watches- 41000 mechanical watches a year-5% of mechanical production are grand complications- The remaining are complications, calatrava, gondola, nautilis, aquanaunt-nonquarts- So ~2100 grand comps a year- there are 38 grand comp references for 2013/14 (35 men, 3 woman)So bottom line, those of you who believe that Patek is over producing their grand complications due to moving to in house movements are wrong. They are most likely producing the same to less. yes there are many more 5140 than 5208 but 2100 piece per year of their fl
