A few weeks ago, we gave you a hands-on look at the Piaget 900P, the thinnest mechanical watch in the world. But this isn't the only new watch Piaget is showing at SIHH. The Altiplano Scrimshaw features a dial made from fossilized mammoth ivory that is then engraved with a map of the Eastern Hemisphere using traditional scrimshaw techniques. Each dial takes 65 hours to produce and these watches really are unique little works of art. 2 OF 15 The Altiplano Scrimshaw starts simply enough – a 38mm Altiplano case in either white or pink gold with an in-house 400P ultra-thin calibre. While these are admirable as-is, this watch is all about the special dial. A piece of preserved mammoth ivory (approximately 40,000 years old) is shaped into a dial that comes in around 1.7mm thick. From there, the dial is engraved with a map and a compass rose using traditional Scrimshaw techniques.Scrimshaw is a special type of engraving that can be traced back to the Inuits and other t
I have seen that older models were just automatic, and the newer ones are chronometer certified. Do they use different movements? For example, I was looking at the old speedmaster date 3513.50, which says automatic, the new one 3210.50 says automatic chronometer. Now I know that Chronometer means that it was tested by the COSC. But are they both using the same movement?Thank You
Been lurking for a while and decided it was time to join. This seems like a good place, and my interest in Hamilton watches is growing.Had a vintage Donald some years ago. No longer have it and miss it. Guess I wasn't cool enough to appreciate it then.Been looking at vintage Hamilton's on the bay, but not having much luck. Timing is everything (no pun intended).Recently picked up a stainless silver dial Ardmore. Lovely watch even though it's quartz. What color is the dial - green, grey? Doesn't look black like the others. How smooth is the winding? Does it keep good time? What do you wise and knowledgeable mavens think of this choice for my second Hamilton? Thanks for bearing with me and I look forward to many happy hours/weeks/months/years learning from you guys and enjoying Hamilton watch
My AD called me this morning and told me to stop by as he had something to show me. I had been convinced the WG Daytona on oysterflex was going to be my next piece, but after trying on the AP titanium, it was a fairly easy decision for me. To me the WG Daytona was pretty similar to the AP titanium in what I was looking for in my next watch. I wanted another chronograph, I wanted a grey-ish dial, I wanted contrasting sub dials, a rubber strap, and it had to be able to be an everyday wear type of piece. Both the Daytona and the Titanium fit that description. The Daytona has always been on the extreme small side for my personal comfort level where as the AP is toward the top end to my comfort level. Both are great watches, but I decided to add another AP instead of the Daytona. The titanium is definitely a very light piece and that was the first thing I noticed when picking it up for the first time especially compared to the RG 44. Although both of my 44¡¯s have the same shaped case,
Just for fun. How did he get this into an Alfa Romeo review. Since dropping cable I really miss Top Gear..timesonline.co.uk/tol/dri...cle5944203.ece
