1917 Elgin Trench Watch, Fahys"ARMORED" Integrated Shrapnel Guard, 24hr Dial
Hey guys !Just got finished putting this one back together yesterday afternoon so I thought that I'd share some results.This is a 1917 Elgin Trench Watch, Fahys Sterling Silver "Armored" Case with an Integrated Shrapnel Guard ! ! !Size 3/0s, 7 jewels, grade 417, sn 20696988.What make this one REALLY stand out is the very rare Enamel 24 Hour Elgin Military Dial.I've only seen a few of these dials over the years and this one is a PERFECT example without any hairlines, chips or cracks.The case measures 38mm lug to lug, 31mm without the crown and it has a nice and wide 16mm diameter.The crown on this watch is golden in color and it's the third one in a row that I've seen of this design with a gold tone crown.The Swiss had a habit of putting gold tone crowns on wrist watches during this era so maybe the Americans did as well on some cases.These "Armored" cases from Fahys first came to market in September of 1917.If you take a look at the inside of the case back you can see a "patent pending

A few question regarding a rolex
I will, as the child of an owner whose father was the original owner, eventually own a 1981 model number 16013 rolex oyster perpetual datejust with a jubilee bracelet and champagne dial.I know basically nothing about fine watches. I wear a Skagen black mesh on black with no date. It is very slim and certainly far from a "luxury" watch, but i like it none the less. As I will eventually wear the heirloom, I'm doing some preliminary research into what owning it will entail.I understand that a rolex requires service.How necessary is this service?What does it provide?How expensive is it?How often should i do it?I would also like to know if there are any other things you would like to say about owning one, or owning any fine watch.On a seperate note, the zoom above the date. Firstly - what is that called. Second, can it be removed, and if so at what cost? Taking a friend watch shopping tmrw. He likes the SS Royal Oak. I am not very familiar with AP and am wondering which model is the most popular go to watch. Like the AP equivalent of the SS Sub C Date in terms of popularity and recognition. Is that the 15300?Also which dial is favored here?
