18 Entrants Will Compete in the 2011 International Chronometry Contest
Fourteen watchmaking companies and four schools will participate in the 2011 International Chronometry Contest. The winners will be announced on October 20 at Chateau des Monts ¨C Horological Museum of Le Locle. Find complete details and a list of entrants inside. The first officially-sanctioned timekeeping competition in 37 years was held in 2009 when 16 timepieces were entered in a single category, each competing against the others. For 2011, the competition has been modified with the contestants divided into three groups: traditional movements, tourbillons, and watchmaking schools.During the competition, the timepieces are subjected to a variety of tests that are based on international standards, and that are much more rigorous than the well-known Official Swiss Control of Chronometers (COSC) tests. Buying watches on the web
What do you think of buying new watches on the web. Obviously there is the risk of getting fakes or other rip-offs but, aside from that, how can watches be sold at such discounts on the web?Right now I'm looking at a purchase that lists for $695, I can get it at Macy's for $550, a local AD will sell it to me for $525, and I can get it on the web at...$350. What? Yes, $350. I'm surprised the AD can't beat Macy's. I know a pruchase I recently made on the web was bare bones. I bought it on ebay and it arrived in a plain manufacturers box and had little documentation aside from the small manufacturers basic how-to book. That was it. I'm not concerned its a fake because it sure has all the hallmarks of being genuine and the seller had a very high rating from many sales on the bay. In the present case I would like to give the AD the business but I can't ignore the price on the web and feel good about it.

A Reunion, Of Sorts...
Many of you will remember that, last year, I gave my brother my Omega Co-Ax Seamaster for his 50th birthday. Since that time, I've been shopping, and it wasn't until just last week that the funding and the right watch both showed up at the same time for me to replace it. My Breitling Seawolf Avenger showed up Thursday morning, and my brother showed up from Florida Thursday night.Anyway, here's a photo of the happy watch owners on the back deck, at six o'clock this morning (Greg's flying to Newark and I'm flying to Vancouver, so we had to do the airport thang). Anyway, I just thought it was a happy "reunion" with my old SMP (I'm the good lookin' one on the left):
