Quintessentially British brand Bremont has a new boutique just off London's Mount Street, which just opened in July 2012. They invited us over to take a look and share a drink with the team and a few collectors. The shop fits the brand perfectly, and here's a look at what we saw.?The first thing you notice when you walk in the front door is a vintage motorcycle. It's the real deal, not a prop - there's a drip pan actually catching oil sitting underneath the thing. The whole boutique is like this - instead of aviation, diving, and motorsports inspired decorations, they've brought in real pieces to fill the store. A floodlight, and ejector seats, propellers, and a few other sizable hunks of wood and metal are peppered around the shop floor. Only Watch happens once every two years (usually in Monaco, but this year, in Geneva for the first time) as you probably know if you're a HODINKEE reader.  You probably also know that the purpose of the auction is to benefit research into better treatments – and perhaps, someday, even a cure – for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, an inherited, progressive, and usually ultmately terminal illness in which a defect in a key muscle structural protein (dystrophin)  causes slow but irreversible loss of muscle tissue.  The benefit auction is organized by the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies ("myopathy" is a general term for muscle tissue disorders) the Monaco Yacht Show, and an auction house which takes responsibility for curating and auctioning a collection of unique pieces made by the world's top watchmaking companies specifically for that purpose.  This year, it's the Phillips Watch Department, which partners with the fir

Museum of Time - Besancon, France
Hi guysI popped into this excellent museum last weekend on the route to my parents in Lausanne. Besancon is in Franche Comte in the east of France, just next to Switzerland. The museum has a large number of historical pieces including a magnificent Leroy pocket watch from 1900. It is claimed to be the most complex watch of its kind for the era...with no less than 24 complications. The watch took 7 years to make. Leroy was a Parisian watchmaker with workshops in Besancon. It was ordered by a Portuguese client, Monteiro de Cavalho.There was a huge number of items on show. I think that these shows are invaluable to collectors as there are pieces of information you do not find anywhere else. Some of the examples of early pocket watches I have already seen in my searches of watches for sale, but the sellers do not realise what they have - luckily you could take photos here without flash :)One other observation was how the more things change the more they stay the same. So, in January I ordered a grey leather hornback strap from AP. I did this as I've never been a big fan of the rubber strap for comfort. It arrived after just 7 months! and today I went to have it put on my watch. My first surprise was that it wasn't a hornback as requested and my second surprise was that it wasn't the finish on the leather that I'd requested either. However, I'm actually pretty happy with the result. So here's a photo, the most important thing that they got perfect is the Leo Messi grey that I ordered, in the photo it's hard to tell but it's actually a perfect match with the grey dial.
