Well, would you look at that - the folks over at Richard Mille, known purveyors, of all things, to make crazy lightweight watches, have just come up with a new material to incorporate into their timepiece designs. ?Then again, I say (type?) that with tongue firmly in cheek. While this is certainly a new material in the world of luxury watches, it's not something they invented on their own. The material in question is a carbon fiber-based material that's made by layers of CF filaments (no more than 30 microns thick) in which each layer is at 45 degrees to the previous one.This is something that comes from the world of racing yachts, which is really where there has been a lot of innovation in the past few years coming up with lightweight materials that can stand up to the stresses of sheer speed, and the forces coming from the wind and water. Girard-Perregaux has announced an evolution of their WW.TC line of traveler-centic watches, continuing the collection with two brand new models. Seeing as the past year has been host to a litany of new worldtimers, it's of little surprise that GP would look to inject their WW.TC formula into this new "Traveller" series. We have known for some time that Girard-Perregaux was going to refresh the WW.TC for 2013. The second new model in the new Traveller collection is the Moon Phases and Large Date, whose features are basically explained by that over-descriptive title - a basic watch it is pleasant enough but lacks pizazz. Hamilton Estoril Automatic History?
Hi everyone this is my first post. I'm so happy to have found this forum.I hope you have some information on this watch. I'm very curious to know its history. I just got into collecting vintage hamilton's (mostly military watches with manual wind movement). I found this watch and immediately bought it. After searching and googling I only found a couple other examples of this watch. The watch is automatic (21 jewel) and has that weird position of the date on the 6 o'clock. It also has a black dial that is different from others I've seen. I guess it comes from the 1960's and probably has something to do with the formula 1 race held in Portugalbut that is only my theory.Hope you can shed some light.here is a youtube clip of it:youtube/watch?v=XRjf0Vplvyw

Orbita or not?
Is there anything about this group of watches that would make the Orbita rotorwind technology unsuitable for it? It seems really attractive and makes a lot of sense intuitively, but I still have nagging concerns, especially about overwinding. I know that Rolexes in particular have fierce winding clutch mechanisms, but surely even for a Rolex it can¡¯t be a good thing to have that clutch constantly slipping over a period of months or years or decades. Anyway, here¡¯s the group. I¡¯d really welcome informed comments pro or con. I apologize for not acknowledging Pearl Harbor Day in yesterday's daily thread. I know it's a significant date in American History yet certain dates escape me in the 7:00 AM time frame. I did end up watching several hours of Pearl Harbor related movies on TCM though. Today, it's the Gary for me.
