Sotheby¡¯s May 10 auction of fine timepieces at the Beau-Rivage Hotel in Geneva will feature treasures old and new. The star among the modern offerings is a Patek Philippe split-seconds chronograph Ref. 5959P. This piece, estimated at between $250,000 and $350,000, contains Patek¡¯s first fully in-house chronograph calibre, CHF 27-525PS, which, at 5.25mm, is the thinnest column-wheel split-seconds chronograph ever made. Important vintage wristwatches are well represented in this sale, and the notable models include a Patek Philippe Ref. 2499 fourth series, circa 1981, estimated at between $280,000 and $350,000.One of the highlights of the evening will be rare and historically significant gold, enamel and diamond presentation pocket watch with matching chain and fob symbolizing the Royal Military Order of Saint George, most probably made for King Ludwig II of Bavaria circa 1880. This piece is estimated at between $27,000 and $44,000.

Rolex and BMW Owners
An appreciation for quality extends to all aspects of our lives.JBH's thread on Montblanc got me thinking about automobiles.I also own a few Montblanc's, but I also own several BMW's and have seen pics of Steve's 7 series and JBH's 3 series. Who else on this forum shares a passion for fine engineering of the BMW persuasion?I think this would make for an interesting thread as to our tastes for watches juxtaposed against our tastes in cars.Non BMW owners are free to share their automobile passions as well for this thread.My particular passion is for the 1980's BMWs as evidenced below. I feel this vintage of BMW's had the iconic style that was their signature for so many years. In contrast, my Rolex preferences are split between vintage vs. current models. Advice on Avenger Sea Wolf!
I am on the verge of getting a BNIB 'V' serial Sea Dweller from my AD in the next few weeks.However I have today seen (and tried on) the Breitling Avenger Sea Wolf.I confess to not usually being a Breitling fan as I tend to find them too "bling" and too large for my tastes.However, the SW has really grabbed me despite it's (to me) huge 44mm x 18.4mm and weighing in at 102g.I tried on the blue dial version (which is a very grey/blue and almost black/grey in certain light). I was bowled over by it's superb build quality and the general "feel" of it.I love the tool like simplicity of the dial and the crown, winding, setting time etc was smooth as silk and (dare I say it!) better than any Rolex or Omega I've ever owned!The Ti case & bracelet made it a very light watch for it's proportions and if anything added rather than deterred from it's feel of quality and solidity.The legibility of the dial was excellent too.All in all I was very impressed.Thing is I don't know about the size?I th

with north korea rattling their sabres, or i guess their bayonets, about nuking us (good try on that one with their rockets that tend to blow up on the pads) it got me wondering about that one errant missile that might make it to our shores. what might be the effect on a mechanical watch if the bomb is far enough away from ground zero yet close enough to rain low level radiation upon said watch? will the radiation create some bizarro magnetic anomoly that will cause a mechanical watch to do bizarro things? any other effects? of course this scenario assumes said watch is nowhere close to ground zerowe know what will happen then.on the off chance north korea pulls off an amazing upsetthe upset of century would likely be an understatementand takes over our country are there any north korean watches we should be looking out for? with the embargo on luxury goods i suspect the north koreans will clean out rolex stores and the only thing left will be north korean watches.just to make sure

The game has really changed
My buddy bought the 1st Daytona C at this AD. He got the call on 12-24-16 and was out of town so I had to pick it up for him because the watch had to be bought in store and he could not give his credit card number over the phone. I asked today what it would take to buy a white dial 116500 and was told I would get preference if I bought another watch but it would not guarantee me a SS Daytona. He told me with a straight face times have changed and that’s what it would take to get a white dial 116500. I gave him the same straight face and told him get me a D Blue and White dial 116500 at the same time and we have a deal. I think Rolex is really missing the boat with the allocation issue with SS sport watches and alienating their customers. I feel like my money is no good with Rolex with the current condition.
