I always like to begin my stories about Laurent Ferrier with the same fact. This man, who now makes some of the finest watches around, who also spent four decades of service at a little company called Patek Philippe, ultimately achieving the position of technical and product director, not only raced at 24 hours of LeMans in 1979, but actually podiumed, coming in third place. Did anybody happen to see Two and a Half Men tonight? There were several humorous wristshots and references related to the Submariner. It is normally a funny show, and I thought this was particularly funny being into watches.

Who would be Abraham Louis Breguet¡¯s equal in our times?Close would have come the American watch maker Gene D. Clark who was born in 1948 and passed away prematurely in 2006. Both of these men have been the greatest watch makers of their times.Mr. Clark started out as repairer of vintage arms and drifted away into horology over time. In about 1976 he made horlogy his sole occupation. His motto was to be as good as Breguet was and trust me Mr. Clark was as good as Breguet in his own sense. He designed the first US made tourbillon and it took till 2010 for another one to emerge in the USA when RGM showed his.Mr. Clark is reckoned to have manufactured seven tourbillons in his life time. And the most beautiful one is coming on the block at Christie¡¯s on their November 15 auction.It took Mr. Clark some 10,000 hours to make this beautiful pocket watch and he worked on this watch from 1987 to 1991.
