The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master, a sailors’ watch introduced in 1992, underwent a major facelift recently in both its design and technology. In 2012, Rolex released a version with an Oyster case made of its patented alloy Rolesium, and a cool, blue dial with brushed sunray pattern.Rolesium, a material developed by Rolex and used here in the Yacht-Master’s 40-mm diameter Oyster case, is an alloy of 904L stainless steel and platinum. The bezel, which rotates in both directions and now has a notched ring with 120 gradations, is made entirely of 950 platinum. It has a smooth, sand-blasted finish, except for the raised numerals and indices, which are polished. IWC¡¯s latest release has 550 parts and weighs a hefty 4 kilograms. It was three years in the making. It¡¯s sure to delight watch lovers everywhere, though it does not tell time. It¡¯s a book. As you would expect, IWC Schaffhausen. Engineering Time Since 1868 chronicles the company¡¯s history from the founding in 1868, but it also includes an unexpected ¡°book within a book¡±. More about that in a minute. The book has three authors. German journalist Manfred Fritz presents the comprehensive company history, compiled with careful attention to historical accuracy. Fritz comes from the area near Schaffhausen and he is a genuine watch enthusiast who has published a number of watch-related books. Today sees the launch of the Swatch Sistem51 and the fire burns bright once more.Swatch watches were one of the guilty pleasures of my youth. When the Swatch craze took over the world in the early 90's, I was there in the thick of it. I remember going to Swatch boutiques looking for the "Bora Bora", the headline watch of the Scuba 200 series, and even starting a collection of the Swatch quartz chronographs when they first came out. I got the parts list from Jocke's SM300 project, Rikki was kind enough to put it all together for me and did a full service on the movement. I know there are some who feel this is a franken-watch and I'm not going to debate that. If you take a movement from one watch and put it in the case of another, then it really isn't original or even original with replacement parts, it's an amalgamation. So I can't really call this an NOS Seamaster, it's a wanna-be, but it's my wanna be.Didn't want to pay the watchco prices, didn't want to buy a watch I knew nothing about from ebay or watchuseek. Instead I borrowed Jocke's blue print, bought the parts from Otto Frei, and Rikki was kind enough to pull the movement from a vintage Geneva, service it and put it into a brand new 166.0234 replacement case.Here are some before picture:
