Well I suspect this watch has had a face replacement as it has no identifying marks. However I am not even a novice when it comes to watches.SN: 602773Case Material: Sterling SilverOther Markings: Longines Crest with EF co upon the top of the crest. Hello from a new member. I picked up an unusual (to me anyway) Hamilton watch this morning at a tag sale. The attached picture says it all. I have been able to identify the watch as a c1931 Webster with a Wadsworth white gold filled case (thanks to your fabulous site). The movement is a 17 jewel 987-F with serial number 4276282. Did Hamilton make custom watches or did individuals have them made privately? I haven't been able to identify who Elmer Hogan was and I don't think he was so famous that there are thousands of these watches around. Are there many examples of watches with personalized dials?
I was thinking about this today. Wind up watches and autowinders are less accurate than quartz (soul-less quartz, I know). Not just because the escapement oscillates at a slower and less consistent speed than quartz, but because the rate of the movement is affected by everything from the resting position, to a quick snap of the wrist. It's interestingas an aficionado of fine writing instruments (fountain pens) there were years where I wouldn't touch a ball pen of any kind, unless I was using a waitresses to sign a credit card slip. I loved the look and feel of fountain pens, found them to be far superior to ball pens, and relished the history behind each pen design and/or technology. But, after quite a few years, I came appreciate what the general public felt when ball pens first appeared. They were newer, more superior technology. They are cleaner, easier to use, and more convenient. Are they as romantic as a fountain pen? No. Do they give the same fine flow and flexibility
Sorry may be a bit trivial for some, can someone explain the last two digits mean for the model number?15400ST.OO.1220ST.02 02 for colour or different bracelets?Cheers
