At Baselworld 2013 we gave you an exclusive hands-on look at the Swatch Sistem51, the 51-component mechanical watch completely assembled by machine. Since then, we have been asked regularly "when will I be able to buy one?" Well, today your wait is over (kind of). The Sistem51 is officially launching in the United States today with a pop-up shop at Swatch's Times Square store in New York City, with a second location appearing in San Francisco later this month. Here are all the details about how to get your hands on this $150 Swiss-made marvel. 2 OF 4 Before we get into where you can buy one, here's a quick refresher on the Sistem51. As the name suggests, it has only 51 components including the mechanical movement. Everything is held together by a single central screw and the entire package is put together by machine ¨C even the balance is regulated by machine. The movement is made of an anti-magnetic alloy called ARCAP, has 19 jewels, and boasts a 90 hour power reserve. Pl
Hi everyone, In my capacity as a sales consultant for a Rolex AD, i was asked a question by a client i simply couldn't answer, namely this: How much gold ( in grammes) is in the average bi-metal Rolex!I promised i would do my best to find out for him, which is why i'm reaching out to all of you! Many thanks in advance!
I know that ETA is one of the main manufacturers of Swiss mechanical and quartz movements. I know that they are essentially the result of the consolidation of the Swiss watch industry of the 70s (thanks to the advent of quartz movements). But, whenever I see the term ETA Quartz Movement, as with my beloved Hamilton Venturas, I wonder, "yeah, but what else?" I know that there are some very good Swiss quartz movements that have mechanical parts that rival many, well, mechanicals. I know that there are some fully jeweled quartz movements. But, what are the quartz movements that end up inside Hamiltons? What is inside the Venturas? Are these jeweled quartz movements? Where do they fit in the hierarchy of quartz movement quality? Could they just as easily be a cheap $8-$12 Japanese movement, or is there something about them that makes them worthy of the term "Swiss Movement"?And, while I know this could be considered a general topic, I am thinking about how it relates to Hamiltons,
Bear with me as I'm relatively new to the world of AP. I've been doing some research as of late and talked to one of the AD's from whom I bought my Panerai and Breitling from, and have learned about the extent to which AP is limiting production and distribution. Rolex and PP are starting to do the same, all of which will likely reinforce the already good values of the Rolex SS professional series (prices of second hand hulks have gone up in the last year), the Nautilus line, and of course Royal Oaks. I'm debating between a Royal Oak, Royal Oak offshore (less so), and the PP Nautilus 5726-- which I'm next in line from my AD when she gets another one at retail price. I know the 5711 and 5712 are out as they've got waitlists of 5 years (especially the 5711). My AD--like many other AD's -- lost their contract with AP, as AP continues to pull back production and distribution to AD's nationwide. I'm going to check out one of the boutiques in June and see what they have there, but I'v
