Another Restoration Project is Complete!
Just got back from my watchmaker, and am THRILLED with how this latest project turned out. Here's the "before" photo of the 1972 "Double Red" Sea-Dweller I picked up a couple of weeks ago:Here's the "after":The movement was was strong, and needed no work - just did a clean, oil and adjustment. The bracelet that was on the watch previously was for a more modern Sea-Dweller, and it had the incorrect end links on it. So I replaced it with a correct 93150 with 585 end links. Both the crystal and crown (and tube) were replaced with factory parts. Instead of replacing the bezel insert as I've done with some previous 1680 Subs I've restored, I kept this wonderfully faded bezel and chased down a tritium bezel pearl to put in it (you'll see it's missing in the first photo). A light polish was also done to the case.It took about a week longer than I anticipated getting this project done as it was quite a challenge finding those end links and the tritium "dots." But it was a fun chase and

Design Patents in Watchmaking
I know little of the watch industry. Perhaps this esteemed group can help with my question.In other industries, ornamental designs are covered by Design Patents or equivalents, such as Registered Designs. WIPO countries will also enforce these, and Switzerland (among a large list of others) is a member of WIPO.We know that fake creators are already outside the law you're not going to stop the guy on the streetcorner selling fakes. But if a watch design was protected by a design patent, then you'd be able to enforce it on established companies that make very close homages. Not "loosely-inspired-by" types of designs, but almost 100% copies should be covered.I'm thinking about the many submariner-alike divers, the many almost exact PAM homages, and the like. Many of these differ in style only by the manufacturer's name or a couple of tiny details. It appears they'd violate a design patent.So here's the question: Why aren't watch companies obtaining and enforcing design patents?
