Swatch Group Acquires Harry Winston Watch & Jewelry
The Swatch Group has added another jewel ¡ª or, more precisely, jeweler ¡ª to its crown. The Bienne, Switzerland-based company, which owns watch brands ranging from Swatch to Hamilton to Omega to Breguet, announced Monday that it is acquiring world-renowned jewelry brand Harry Winston, which in recent years has also become a bastion of high watchmaking.In the deal, Swatch Group Ltd. gets 100 percent of the shares of HW Holdings Inc., owner of New York-based Harry Winston, Inc., giving the Group ownership of the brand and all activities related to its jewelry and watches, including its 535 employees worldwide and production company in Geneva, Switzerland. The acquisition sum amounts to U.S. $750 million plus the assumption of up to U.S. $250 million of pro forma net debt. I'm a member of another (non-watch) forum which has a very small membership. It's just a group of folks who've been "friends" on the internet for years.Anyway, one of the forums there is called "Pick's Magic Closet". Last night, one of the guys (who I actually know) was telling us that he'd purchased one of those $50.00 quartz Pro-Divers from Costco. One of the comments he made was that he had to have three links removed form the bracelet. His exact comment was "Well I had the bracelet resized...don't know what kind of gorilla they are marketing these to, but had to take out 3 links".I replied with the following:Higher-end watches include the extra links separate from the bracelet. Trading / Flipping - Is it worth it?
A bit of a general question here.I have a few watches that I don't really wear and am looking to get rid of them while buying something new. I have never sold any of my watches before and I was wondering what sort of percentage of retail is to be expected when trading a watch, I realise there are multiple factors such as desirability etc. As an example lets assume I wanted to trade a Datejust that would retail for around $4,000 and purchase a newer Datejust that would retail for around $7,000. What kind return should I expect on the watch to be sold?
