Patek Sky Moon Tourbillon Brings $1.2 Million at Patrizzi Auction
A Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon in yellow gold, Ref. 5002, sold for $1.2 million at the Patrizzi & Co. auction in New York on October 7. This is the highest price paid for a wristwatch at auction since the beginning of the recession. The watch was purchased by a customer in Europe. CEO Osvaldo Patrizzi said “In the current global recession, this $1.2 million sale result is extraordinary. This auction demonstrates that while demand for mid-level watches for collectors is softening, extraordinary, very rare, limited-edition pieces are still in demand and in some occasions increasing in value.” Mr. Patrizzi also noted that aside from the Sky Moon Tourbillon going to Europe, the other top pieces in the sale went to bidders in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. Later model speedmasters more troublesome?
I think I have noticed more problems reported for later model speedys than older ones. Consistent with my experience with 3. Have one fairly well used by original owner, 1994 gold and ss, that has been 100% reliable. Recently bought rarely used 2000 Schumacher cheap. It had sweep second hand displaced off zero and nonfunctional minute register. Had another little used conventional speedy later model I did not use much; sold to a relative. He is careful user, but it cost $800 for Omega repair after unsuccessfully trying 2 domestic referrals. The Schumacher was fixed by a fine local real watchmaker for $180. I had 3 speedy pros that were fine but little used. Easily sold. Too bulky for me to use. I like these basic autowind Speedmasters, but would buy a late model again only because I am NAWCC member with access to good and reasonable repair.

If a purchase a watch (or other such item) from a buisness in an EU country and do not pay the VAT at the point of purchase does Uncle Sam swoop in when the watch arrives to collect some tax or customs charge? If not, is the VAT some form of EU tax? Thanks.
