With the Tonda 1950, the designers at Parmigiani Fleurier capture the brand’s essence with a few brushstrokes. Parmigiani’s newest movement – the twelfth in-house caliber from the manufacture – is the PF 700, an extra-thin automatic that powers the Tonda 1950. The movement is 30mm or 13 ? lignes in diameter and just 2.6 mm thick, with an off-center micro-oscillating weight in platinum 950. A single barrel provides 42 hours of autonomy.The nickel silver main plate is sand-blasted, circular-grained and then rhodium-plated. Watchmakers have always tried to battle the effects of gravity on a timepiece’s balance assembly. The well-known tourbillon has, to date, been the de facto solution to this problem and we’ve seen multi-axis tourbillons, flying tourbillons, and double tourbillons. At SIHH this week, Roger Dubuis, the avant garde Geneva watch brand, has introduced an effective alternative to the tourbillon, and it’s a world first – a watch movement with four sprung balances.Called the Quatuor and introduced in the company’s Excalibur case, the movement’s balances are paired, two and two, and positioned at 90 degree angles to one another, linked by differentials. Each balance operates at 4 Hz, adding up to 16 oscillations per second. By distributing the effects of gravity across the four balances, these effects are negated, thus resulting in a more consistent timekeeping rate. I am a novice collector
As a new collector I have a few watches. I tend to stay away from the more modern watches (quartz, kinetic) and stick to the manual wind or automatics. I currently have an old Ellis, (apparently pre WWII) and Imperial Datomatic 25 jewel, an Omax (1960s Swiss auto) a Gruen auto, an Elgin from approx 1962-1966, a swiss made Davis, Swiss made Paul Peugeot in original box, 2 vintage Swiss Croton autos and 1 Croton quartz, an Armitron auto with Sea Gull movement, a Titoni made between 1961-1970, a 1979 Seiko 5, a new Seiko 5, and I have a Dugenia auto with the 1050 1461 movement and a Buren with a Buren Grand Prix movement coming. Been collecting a few months. Some watches were given to me, some came from thrift stores and some from ebay. I am not as young as I once was and am no longer physically able to make the money I once did. So I obtain watches I like. I'm not to familiar with Panerai but I'm considering purchasing one. The models that attract my attention are:Pam 441Pam 351Pam 335Pam 292Of those listed are there any I should stay away from? Do pams keep good resale value? How good is the ceramic material in Pams? If I swap to a rubber strap can these be used for beach/pool swimming?Anything else I should know before purchasing a pam?
