No More "Luxury" Watches
I want "luxury" to die. Not actual luxury from an economic standpoint, but a lot of how we use the actual word "luxury." Allow me to set up this topic just a bit, and explore my ideas with you. I promise that in the long run my suggestions will benefit everyone, and this is free advice to an industry that I think needs it.I write about timepieces, lots of different timepieces including many that are high-end. "High-end" having the association that they are perhaps well-made, use expensive materials, are exclusive, and cost a lot. You know"luxury." What cheapens many of these brands is that they attach the term "luxury" to their image and products. Cheapening not only the word "luxury," but also the products themselves. Things aren't "luxury" because you insert that word into your slogan. Nothing is worse for luxury watches than the term "Luxury Swiss Watches" next to a brand name as a slogan. Wandering around Manhattan yesterday afternoon...
It truly is a watch lover's paradise here. I travel to Manhattan once or twice a month for business but don't often take time to hit all the big name watch shops. I actually had some free time yesterday afternoon and went on a bit of a watch shop tour, Tourneau, Wempe, Kenjo and all those jewelry shops on 47th. My head was spinning. When I went looking for my GMTIIC, I called or visited all the AD's whenever I was here. Nobody had one in stock. I got lucky and found it in upstate NY (just days before the price hike :)). I was surprised to not see one SS GMTIIC at all the AD's. I figured it would be much more available these days. Several of the 47th St. shops had the SS version in the window, but I didn't bother to check prices. These guys are gray market, correct?On an unrelated note, I found a SS Daytona at a Tourneau in San Diego last week. They wanted $16K for it.
