Remember General Patton's five-minute-repeating, split-second chronograph pocket watch that we covered here back in September? Well, it went up for auction today at Heritage Auctions and sold for a whopping $137,000.The watch was originally purchased for $350 (negotiated down from $600) by General Patton's father, George Patton II as a gift for his son back in 1927. 1 OF 2 The watch was originally estimated for $25,000 to 35,000 and hammered at $137,000, which is no surprise due to the provenance and level of complication. Another Trivial Mystery Solved!
In the Elgin Service Manual, in the Parts section, there's a listing for 'Pinion, Cannon for curved or spherical reg. or flat Nite-Glo'. I could understand why you'd need a different cannon pinion for curved dials - you need to raise the hands farther to clear the higher dial center. But why use the longer cannon pinion on a luminous dial?Well, my question was answered when I looked on the back of what to all appearances were regular, non-luminous Dauphine hands. There was lume on the BACK of the hands. Presumably, this would cast light on the dial underneath the hand, and the hand itself would be a shadow in the middle of it. The reason for raising the hands is to have the light spread far enough to see.I think this explains what looks like diffuse radium burn on the dial of a Lord Elgin that Indyago posted. Regular luminous hands leave small, intense burns because they're closer to the dial, while 'Nite-Glo' hands would leave a more diffuse burn.

Well, I just received something I never thought I'd buy (based on cost) but I got it today and I can say it is amazing. I've never seen a diagonal bracelet which I suppose is one of a couple variances of their bracelets for the Colt GMT (which one is best;) this one is more comfortable than any bracelet I've worn. The finish on the watch is really nice and of a caliber I have not seen before. The person before me must have worked in a pillow factory because there isn't a scratch on the watch and it looks very well cared for. I uploaded some nice pictures for your viewing enjoyment. From 7 sec slow per day to spot on..! Very happy now!
I bought this new model Navy brand new in december 2014. I was a bit dissapointed as the watch was running 7 sec slow per day. :-(I decided to wear it a few weeks anyway before sending it to the spa because I wanted to wear my new friend for a while.Now 4 months later the watch is running spot on. I adjusted the time to summertime two weeks ago and it is 2 sec behind today after two weeks. So 2 sec slow in 14 days. I did not do anything to the watch just wear/enjoy it everyday. I am very happy that I didn't send it in for service yet and that the watch is so precise now.
