In-Depth: Four Complicated Rolex Models From The Past That Deserve To Be Made Again, As Seen In The Phillips Geneva Watch Auction Two
The longer one spends around the watch collecting world, the more one tends to be interested in early watches – typically those that pre-date the "modern era." What I mean by that is there is a clear division with many brands – Rolex, Omega, and Heuer, for example, all began naming watch lines in the 1950s and '60s: the Submariner, Speedmaster, Carrera, et al. But, the watches that came before these great lines of horology existed are fascinating not only because of their relative obscurity, but also because of their purity in design. In this story, I examine four watches all available in Phillips' Geneva Watch Auction Two that were made by Rolex, and they're all complicated. But, none of them fall under the category of a Submariner, GMT, Daytona, or Explorer. And there is real beauty in that. Hey Guys,Nothing monumental here, but I just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying this new sub-forum. Jeez, I had no idea how many American watch makers there were - and - the beautiful watches they made. Most folks have heard of Hamilton, Gruen and Waltham but that's about it.I have 3 American watches: a gold Waltham pocket watch as well as an American Watch Co. "silverine" pocket watch (neither of which run and are family pieces that I don't really know which relative owned them) and a 1942 Hamilton Yorktown which I know belonged to my grandfather.I remember seeing the Hamilton at my grandmother's house since I was a kid. My grandfather died when I was 4 years old, so I never really knew him. Anyway, she had this until she died a few years ago and while cleaning out her place I asked my Dad if I could have it.I kept it in a similar dresser drawer until one day I decided to send it to a friend who is changing careers and plans to be a watchmaker. Another Great Day at European Watch Co in Boston v.Pics
I decided to stop in European Watch Co as I am looking to add a dressier piece into my collection. Everytime I am there the experience gets better. I get greeted by everyone with smiles as I walk in. Josh came right over and remembered my name. We chatted for a bit and I found out Josh had just got back from Geneva (Christy's 175th auction and the other auction). Very cool! You can tell he and everyone there is so passionate about watches.The cool thing is they have something for everyone! From watches under 5k to plenty of pieces north of 50k. All the employees are present and helpful and fun to just talk with. There is no cold sell them on the spot nor snobby atmosphere everyone who loves watches is welcomed with open arms.I happened to run into two buddies I had met at the first BostonRedBar meeting a few weeks ago (Shane ) and found out about the second meeting Tuesday, will be going for sure Anyway, just a fun experience trying on a bunch of great watches and narrowing down the li
