I just had to share this with you guys ! ! !I received an e-mail yesterday from a gentleman debating what I was calling an Elgin "Blackjack" Pershing Trench Watch due to the case the movement was housed within. The debate was that I have a Pershing housed in a 14k yellow gold filled trench watch case and that I called it a "Blackjack" Pershing. We sent a couple e-mails back and forth about the issue. To the best of my knowledge the black Elgin "Star Dial" trench watches started out as a "jobber" watch and were not fully assembled by Elgin during WWI. These were first available in 1917 when the United States entered WWI with General Pershing leading our Doughboys. I am basing this information on the earliest date stamp that I have ever seen on the back of a Pershing dial which was 11-17 for November of 1917. You would go to a watchmaker's shop and pick out your dial, movement, case and band and the watchmaker would put it all together for you. These style of trench watch were affectiona
