New Steampunk Watch Direction: Asymmetry, Big Gears: New Items From Olga Clock Works
It's been a while since I covered new work from one of my favorite watch and clock artists; Olga Narozhna (click to visit her site). I wrote an at length article about her here. Among her many fine efforts, she offers really interesting steampunk watch creations, that if you are lucky, she sells on eBay. For the initiated, steampunk is a design style that melds industrial revolution era technology aesthetic, Victorian era design cues, and a hefty dose of Jules Verne science fiction wonder.Two new wearable pieces of functional art on available from Olga, and really show a new level of refinement in her style. What is a 'rich history?'
I see this term thrown around, and I think it is misused. It is clearly a marketing tool and mainly hype. I certainly don't think you can get the rights to the name of an ancient watch maker and then claim to have a 'rich history.' Rich history implies an unbroken ownership and manufacturer that preceeds the QR (quartz revolution). Actually, the word implies that your company goes far back into history unbroken and in the hands of watch makers and not businessmen and corporate nerds.So, who today actually HAS a 'rich history?' I think Rolex qualifies as it has remained in family hands for many decades and also has 'in house' capability. 'In house' would HAVE to be an important part of 'rich history.' As far as I know, Seiko would qualify. Patek, Jaeger, Cartier, Franck Muller, Corum, Blancpain, Bovet, AP, Roger Dubuis (and the other privates), GO, Nomos, Omega, Panerai, Parmigiani, Piaget, Montblanc, Timex, UN, UG, VC, Zenith....Do these qualify, really? [I searched the forum, but it looks like this hasn't been covered before]Seeing the new PP book with the font so largely printed got me wondering what the font was... A quick Google search provided the answer: Monotype Grotesque Regular. The best links are on Wikipedia Foundry was an American company that developed a machine for typesetting, and Grotesque is one the fonts that was produced there, around 1926. It did not do as well as other Monotype fonts like Futura and Gill Sans, which had a cleaner look.Perhaps someone can identify the first use of this font by PP?J

EXPII or DJII (white)
I¡¯m looking to buy a one and only Rolex. I¡¯m not the type to switch out watches or have a rotation. I wear one watch and wear it 24/7. It never comes off no matter the activity. Like the title says im looking at the Polar 216570 or the white dial 116300. Date is the most important which they both have, GMT function is nice but not a deal breaker. I have a 7¡± wrist. In the past I have had a black expii, GMTii, and currently a SD4k. But none of them have been THE watch for me and have all ended up being flipped. The SD4k will also be flipped for this next watch that I hope to keep ¡°forever¡±. Any insight would be great. Thanks
