Girard-Perregaux reveals the complexity behind the dial, adding a level of mechanical involvement to an already dramatic timepiece. The movement¡¯s wheels and levers co-star with the large date and moon-phase displays to increase appreciation of the intricate inner engine.Too often, the fascinating interplay of components that power timepiece displays is hidden behind a dial. Girard-Perregaux draws the curtain back with a dial fashioned from clear, tinted sapphire. The result is a smoked-glass effect that reveals the caliber beneath and that shows off the applied Art Deco hour markers to great effect. The smoked sapphire dial highlights the displays while leaving the movement visible for all to see. Focusing front and center, the large date and moon-phase displays grab your attention. Like most big-dates, this one places the digits on two separate disks. Girard-Perregaux uses some clever engineering to minimize the ¡°two level effect¡± that often plagues such displays. One disk is cle
A few months ago I joined a group of journalists and pro driving instructors behind the wheels of several high-zoot sports cars at Laguna Seca racetrack, and on the 18 Mile Drive in Carmel, California. One stood out clearly from the rest ¨C the Lotus Evora. Let’s take a look. The younger among you may know Lotus only through the Elise ¨C a purpose-built track car that offers great fun in small doses, but you would not want to live with one every day. The Elise embodies Colin Chapman¡¯s twin virtues of simplicity and lightness, but these do not a comfortable car make. Modern niceties like sound insulation, suspension and storage space have been sacrificed at the altar of performance. The Evora, on the other hand, is a car made to live with.Where the Elise requires inelegant contortions to enter and exit, the Evora offers generous portals and slender sills. Once inside, dignity and spinal disks intact, words like spacious, comfortable, and even luxurious come to mind. The upscale surro
José Bautista crushes baseballs for a living. In 2010, the former part-time player exploded on the scene for the Toronto Blue Jays with a Major League-leading 54 home runs. He hasn't slowed down since; over the past six seasons, he has hit the most home runs in baseball. (Bautista finished the recently completed 2015 season with 40 home runs; his Blue Jays begin the playoffs on October 8th against the Texas Rangers.) And so when all that success led to a lucrative, multi-year contract, José decided to reward himself by rekindling a childhood passion: watches. I finally gave my Speedy a Paul Newman / panda conversion. I replaced the black dial with a silver dial (with black subdials); the white with silver hour minute hands; and the white with an orange sweeper (thought about doing a black sweeper, but I think the orange really pops); I left the white subdial hands the same. I got all the parts from Otto Frei's place in Oakland. Here are the before and afters, let me know what you guys and gals think:Omega.jpgPanda.JPG
