Ulysse Nardin 243-92/601 wrist watches news:
Last month I was able to get hold of one of the rarer Elgin models from the 1950s. It's one of the ones where the back is held on by 4 screws, but the shape, and especially the movement are not often seen - the 19j 676. This movement appears to have been the last of the 15/0 movements, and is a sister to the 21j 675 in the Lord Elgin Townsman I posted about a couple months back.In a year of watching, I've seen maybe 3 of them on Ebay.No pics of the movement, sorry. I took it apart in a fit of Watch Mania before I was able to shoot it.Obviously, the dial needs redone - the markers are loose, and it's stained. The biggest problem, however, is the case. You see, of the 4 screw holes, 3 are completely stripped. When I got it, the back was not really firmly attached. There was a screw in one hole, a loose screw, and an epoxy-like substance at one or more of the other corners. No gasket, and the innards were all dusty. So, here's my problem - I want to fix this watch so I can wear it.
Dear all. Please see a link to an interview I gave to a Russian journalist on Horology. Out of my collection of watches they show four pictures (strangely NONE of me).Two Dubey and SchaldenbrandMy 18kt 1929 HarwoodandA WWI picture of a Russian Nurse wearing a 'wristlet'.I took the liberty of translating the Russian to English - not perfect, but explains most of the interview (some is off-track) - Mentioned of course is the NAWCC Museum where I was in 2012 a guest curator - Enjoy - AdamSORRY but to see pictures you must click on link Часовое искусство, или «укращение времени»Russkaya IspaniaHorology, or the "taming of time"Publication Date: February 4, 2013 In: Fun | comment: 0What do we know about the watch? Please smack me senseless when I ask this.... This is just a total newbie question...I see a lot of watches showing higher BPH like 36000 by zenith and many other watches touting 28000. The APs are down in the 21000 from what I have seen...Why are they so slow? While I would agree that faster doesnt always make it better it seems to be a modern standard and that AP is behind in terms of the general market. Can someone enlighten me on this? The more technical explanation the better for my nerdy self...
My father bought his Seamaster 30 (right) used in England in the late 60s and has worn it almost every day since. This watch saw a lot of action - He traveled from England to India overland and lived in India with it for years. We now live in the U.S. - this watch has been his constant companion. A couple of years ago, I bought myself a 30th birthday present of the Seamaster Planet Ocean 45.5mm with the 8500 movement. I had lusted after Planet Oceans since I first took a real interest in watches in my early 20s. The two watches are VERY different and I'm sure that individual tastes would side very much with one or the other, but I really enjoy the fact that we both wear Omega's from the same lineage. They reflect our personalities in their differences, but a commonality of family. Just felt like sharing these pictures as we had them together the other day and took a couple of snaps. Anyone else have family watch stories to share?
