I'm pleased to announce that WTF now has a dedicated German Watch Forum. WTF member Christiaan has volunteered to join the WTF Admin Team and moderate our new WTF German Watch Forum. Thank you Christiaan!!!! Enjoy!
About 10 years ago, I got 3 watches at a yard sale for $15. One was an old Seamaster, one was an Elgin, and the last was a women¡¯s Girard-Perregaux. It wasn¡¯t much to look at. The crystal was scuffed and some of the ¡°gold tone¡± had worn off. It looked a bit 70¡¯s-ish and a bit cheap. I tossed it in a drawer.Reading a little bit on this site has got me wondering though. GP is certainly a venerable marque. Did they go downscale for awhile in the 70s with the advent of quartz movements, or were they able to maintain quality?Looked at carefully, the watch looks like it could actually clean up quite nicely. On close inspection, the case says ¡°Goldplated 20¡± which I assume means 20 microns, so respectable. Thanks to my little $6.99 Buy.com toolkit I was able to get the back off. This reveals a 17-jewel unadjusted movement labeled Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic Swiss on the rotor. The movement is also labeled ¡°866-808¡±, which I assume is the caliber. I have not really been able to find a
Can anyone advise whether the attached deployant buckle looks right for a 5140 made in 2007 ? It does not have the PP 'Calatrava' symbol on the ourisde. The watch is still sealed and the paperwork all matches up, so I have no reason to doubt its authenticity, but I equally have not seen one picture of a PP buckles without the symbol.
Just finalized my first PP purchase. I should have a new 5726 by Wednesday morning. I'll post some pictures when I get it. I appreciate all of your enabling pictures. I don't know how this ends, but perhaps it will slow down a bit.
The Rolex website only shows one option for YG Daytonas on Oysterflex:But I swear I've seen at least two other variants on the forum: one all black dial, and another black with yellow subdials (panda style). Do those exist? Did owners just happen to stumble upon those dial options at an AD, or were they custom orders? It's frustrating that Rolex don't show all options on the site, especially as seeing a Daytona at an AD is a near-impossibility these days.
