Jewels act like the roller bearings or bushings of a watch's internals which are used to combat friction. Friction not only reduces the lifespan of the parts rubbing against each other, it affects accuracy as well. Since jewels were intended to be used on high wear points it made sense that the harder & smoother the material that they are made of, the better the reduction of friction. In 1704 the Swiss astronomer and optician Nicolas Fatio de Duillier patented a way of drilling rubies so they could be used in watch movements. The French company De Beaufre' used his technique to manufacture the first watch that incorprated rubies into it's mechanism.De Beaufre' pocket watch from 1720:

Help -- my new watch is too small for me
Hi All! This is my first post I finally registered after lurking for awhile. I just love reading this forum and seeing everybody's goodies. I am hoping someone can help me out I ordered an Ebel 1911 two-tone ladies watch. It arrived today and the band is just about 1/4" too small. I know this is a discontinued watch and I probably have no hope of finding two extra links anywhereI live hours away from any large cities and usually have to buy online, so I wasn't able to try this on in person. However, this is the first time ever a watch has not fit me.Is there any way to enlarge a watch bracelet? Would my local jeweler know how to do something like this? I love this watch and don't want to have to return it...Any help appreciated! Thank you!Carolyn
