SIHH 2013 Preview: Ralph Lauren Sporting World Time
The 2013 Salon International de Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), in which many luxury watch brands introduce their new models for the year, doesn¡¯t take place until late January, but one of those brands, Ralph Lauren, has offered us a preview of one of those new watches, called the Sporting World Time.The latest addition to Ralph Lauren¡¯s Sporting collection, the World Time watch has a rotating disk engraved with the names of 24 world cities, each representing one of the world¡¯s major time zones. The disk works with the second time-zone subdial at 6 o¡¯clock (which also has a day-night indicator) to indicate the time in another zone.The dial, which has a varnished, deep blue finish, also includes a date subdial at 2 o¡¯clock and a semicircular power-reserve indicator at 10 o¡¯clock. In 1983 Seiko began a design partnership with Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro that resulted in the production of a few very interesting pieces in the mid 1980s. For 2013 Seiko has begun a re-issue of these timepieces starting with the first model - the Seiko 7A28 6000. We can't say for sure, but we have a feeling more 1980s Giugiaro watches are coming. Giugiaro is most well-known for his automotive designs, including that of the famous DeLorean DMC-12, along with literally dozens and dozens of other cars. For the most part, the watches he designed for Seiko are spectacular and highly indicative of what 1980s futuristic design was all about.
